No USB 3.0 Driver for HP Proliant Microserver Gen8

Asked by John

Hi there, while the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 has been awarded the status of certified for Ubuntu, I am having trouble finding the USB 3.0 driver. It did not get installed automatically during OS install, and is also nowhere to be found on HP's website. Please advise, thanks!

Hi,

What version of Ubuntu are you trying? The USB 3 drivers are part of the kernel. You don't need to "find them", they really should just "be there", of course, depending on what version of Ubuntu you're using.

USB 3 ports were tested and functioned on our test specimen.

Hi Jeff, thanks for your reply. I am using ubuntu server 14.04.3. Reason I think the USB 3.0 driver is missing is that I am getting less than 35MB/s transfer speed on the USB 3.0 ports with my USB 3.0 external hard drive, which was tested on my desktop and had more than 90 MB/s transfer speed there.
Did I miss any configuration then?

No, I think it's likely that it's a matter of the controller in use (though I don't have one to physically test on, as that was tested at the HP labs in Texas).

Looking at the test results, the tester who did that machine only got about 20MB/s (so likely a cheap usb key as well).

Out of curiosity, how are you testing this and determining the transfer speed on both your desktop and the MicroServer? And what OSs are on your desktop vs the Microserver?

There's really not much to be done, unfortunately, as I believe this is just a matter of the USB3 controller chosen for this system vs the one in your desktop. But as I said, I don't have the means to recreate what you're seeing. I did try a USB3 Flash Drive and a WD USB3 HDD on both a Macbook Air and an HP Z220 workstation and in both cases I saw around 22MB/s for both devices on both systems.

The MBA runs Ubuntu 15.10 and the Z220 runs 14.04.3. so that's two completely different kernels (3.19 and 4.2 respectively).
