Feedback on the IBM x3100 M4

Asked by Kumar Bindal

I just bought IBM X3100 M4 server with two hard disks each is 1 TB. Yesterday I was trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 on this machine bit grub boot loader was failed and displayed fatal error.

I just want to know the followings:

1) Can I not install Ubuntu 14.04 on IBM X3100 M4 server?
2) I have bootable USB for Ubuntu 14.04 but IBM X3100 M4 is not booting as I have already changed the boot sequesnce. So in order to install Ubuntu I boot this machine from USB device option.
3) If I download Ubuntu 12.04 from http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201112-10191/ then will it work?
4) I want to implement RAID 1 can I do this while creating partitions?

Please give your better suggestions to go ahead.

Jeff Lane suggests this article as an answer to your question. Please review this information for avenues of technical support that are available from the Ubuntu Community and Canonical.

There could be several things wrong here... if you're using some form of onboard RAID (fakeraid) then likely that will not work (I suspect that's the case as you mentioned setting up RAID 1). If you want RAID, your best option is either creating software RAID or using a ServeRAID card from IBM for your x3100M4.

Other things that could cause this include custom partition issues, installing grub to the wrong drive, etc. I've also seen some cases where the installer tries installing grub to the USB installation device because it is presented as the first hard disk by the kernel.

Ubuntu Advantage should be able to help you solve this issue.
