Feedback on the Dell Precision Tower 7810 - Avalon

Asked by Timothy Kam

With preinstalled dell version of Ubuntu 12.04, I have network or internet connection drop-outs on a daily basis. I'm using a manual and fixed IP address via Network Manager GUI on Ubuntu. This problem persists even after reinstall of latest driver from Intel for the inboard Intel I217-LM NIC. I have to do restart network-manager to reconnect to internet each time. Also I notice increasing Rx packet drops over time.

Dell has replaced the motherboard and NIC, so we can rule out physical issues with NIC. It is not a network switch problem either because the problem does not replicate for my other Mac machine when I switch the Ethernet cable to it, and our IT dept tried alternative ports on the network switch.

Is there a solution to this problem? Dell has no clear answer so far.

Hello Timothy,

Sorry about your experience.

Some questions:

Was it failing with the pre-install image from the very beginning? or after you updated your system?

Thanks!
Ara.

Hi Ara,

The internet connection dropout issue was already present the first few
days of use, and this was on the Dell certified OEM install of Ubuntu 12.04
LTS and ithe problem persisted. I thought this was to do with sleep
settings with the BIOS power management, did all to prevent sleep but no
luck.

So then I looked up on Ubuntu forums which suggested upgrading to version
14.04, and this version was supposed to have a newer kernel supporting the
Intel I217-LM controller. Next, I tried updating with the driver from Intel
as well but no joy there either.

Cheers,
Tim

Hi Jerry, thanks for your following up. I’ll have to get back to you
in a few days as I have no access to the machine at the moment.

I cannot manage to generate this report. I get a message saying there is no
such thing. If this is related to the ISO version of the Ubuntu
installation DVD, I had reinstalled with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS desktop version.
(This was since the OEM 12.04 LTS install was problematic for me.)

There's not much info in the dmesg actually,
googling a bit seems there are some user indeed have issues,
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2275833 and
http://askubuntu.com/questions/575487/network-eth0-dhcp-static-ip-and-autonegotiation-issues/576360#576360
suggest a workaround to lower the network speed to 100M or 10M may help:

#sudo ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off speed 100

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the suggestion, but my connection is set on a manually fixed IP
address. These forum suggestions to turn off auto-negotiation and/or alter
the speed seem to apply to automatic IP leases, am I correct? Thanks for
your time and help.

Hello Timothy,

As we cannot reproduce this issue on our side with a 12.04 Ubuntu preinstalled system, I will suggest you to open a bug for it with "ubuntu-bug linux", for a more detailed debugging procedure, or go to the community for help.

Please refer to the following links for more information:
