Problem with the HP Z230 Tower Workstation graphics

Asked by Meir Goldenberg

My HP Z230 Tower Workstation is supposed to come with Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller.
When I enable Integrated Graphics in BIOS, Ubuntu 14.04 boots into black screen. When Integrated Graphics is disabled (which is the default setting...), the system is workable and the only glitch I noticed was that the graphics card did not wake up after a suspend. The lspci utility determines "VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 13bb (rev a2)"...
Could someone please clarify for me:
1. Do I need to install an additional driver for the integrated graphics controller to be properly recognized?
Please note that this computer "has been awarded the status of certified for Ubuntu" as per http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201410-15839/.
2. If the system is equipped with Integrated Graphics, then what does Integrated Graphics being disabled in BIOS mean? (i.e. what other graphics is there?). Also, how come this setting is the default setting in BIOS?
Thank you!

Hello,

It seems that your systems has two graphic controllers, one Intel and one nVidia.

For the suspend issue with the nVidia card, you'll probably need to install the proprietary driver for it.

For the integrated graphic controller, its driver has alreay been included in the kernel, you don't need to install any driver for it, however you still can download the latest driver from https://01.org/

Also note that the system we certified here does not have an additional graphic card, its configuration might be different from yours.

The reason why the integrated graphic controller was disabled in the BIOS by default, I think it's because you have a nVidia graphic card shipped with it.

Regards.
