Feedback on the Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110)

Asked by Allan Herriman

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110) with Intel graphics. It had been working fine with various versions of Ubuntu up to and including 13.10.
It crashed often after I installed Ubuntu 14.04 (64 bit), perhaps once per day on average, and most often when startup up or shutting down. When I bothered to look at the logs, they seemed to mention something about a protection fault inside an interrupt handler.

It took a few (frustrating) months, but I think I have finally solved the problem: I updated the BIOS to the most recent version (A11) and it hasn't crashed since. I had been using BIOS version A07 prior to the upgrade.

This isn't a question and I don't require any support or even a response; I'm posting this here in case anyone else has this same issue.

Thanks for the information!

These systems are certified with 12.04, not 14.04, therefore, I am makring this question as solved.

It will remain in this database, though, in case it is interesting for other users.
