Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540 - problems with hibernate and suspend

Asked by Dylan Southward

The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540 is on the list of approved hardware, which is why I recently bought two of them and installed 14.04. Pretty much everything is working smoothly except for hibernate and suspend. The machines (both of them) will not wake up from suspend and require a hard reboot (long press on the power button). Hibernate works okay on one machine but on the other one it wakes from hibernate with networking disabled and I need to reboot to get the wireless connection back up and running.

I have seen countless blog posts and questions on hibernate and suspend not working correctly but I am using hardware that is on the approved list and should not have these issues. Admittedly the hardware was approved for 12.04, but surely 14.04 will not introduce new issues.

Help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Having read a few more comments on the topic of certification I now see that only pre-installed versions of Ubuntu are certified. My laptops came with Windows 8.1 and I did a clean install of 14.04, removing Windows. Perhaps this question no longer falls within the scope of 'certification' but if there is a solution that you could point me to that would resolve the problem I would still be very grateful.

Hello Dylan,
In most cases, when a system is having issue with suspend/hibernate, the root cause of it probably will be the stand-alone graphic card. You could find your video card with the following command in the terminal:
lspci -nn

If there is one, you could give the proprietary video driver a try (search "driver" in you dash)
Or even file a bug against it:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelHibernate

Cheers.

Can you help with this problem?
