Feedback on the Dell Inspiron 7737

Asked by gorkon

Dual Booting Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 13.04. It works, but if I hit reboot in Windows and let it boot up Ubuntu normally the sound doesn't appear to work. If I shut all the way down THEN power back up the sound works. Actually that's not right. It works but it only comes out the headphone port and not the speakers.

Hello,

The model you mention is certified with Ubuntu but only for the model-specific Ubuntu preinstalled version:

http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201306-13869/

This means that we haven't tested or certified with the stock Ubuntu version you mention (13.04), thus we can't guarantee that it will work.

In your case, you say that:

- If Ubuntu boots cleanly from scratch/poweroff (a cold boot), then sound works well.
- If Windows starts first, then you reboot (a warm boot), sound doesn't work in Ubuntu.

I'd chalk this up to Windows leaving the audio hardware in an inconsistent or incorrect state; this may be reported as a bug to Ubuntu, but it's likely to be dismissed due to Windows being the suspect party here.
