Dell Inspiron 5423 14z

Asked by Johannes Benoit

hi,

installing 64bit 12.04 LTS didn't work, the system was not able to boot.
32bit version works, but of course not really good.
Installing system on the ssd-drive was not possible. gparted recognizes the disk, but setup doesn't.
any hints?

cheers
Johannes

hi, would you please confirm the following:
1. did you make sure you enable the UEFI boot to install 64-bit 12.04 LTS?
2. if yes, would please tell me whether there is IRST settings on your system? It looks like you have a system with hybrid hard disk, and it may be supported by the IRST tech. And the setting may cause something wrong.

hi,
yes UEFI was enabled
IRST in the systemsetup was disabled.
You are right, the system has two HD (one ssd and a normal), and the key might lay there...

I see. Few more further question please:

* would you please confirm your IRST raid setting does be disabled?
(not only your IRST is disable, but also confirm the raid setting for the IRST is also cancelled)

* Is your IRST setting in BIOS or not?
* What is your BIOS? InsydeH2O or ...?

BIOS is Aptio Setup Utility (Version A08) vo more info..
I didn't found a option to disable raid in the bios. when installing 12.04 I tried
dmraid -rE /dev/sdb

The legacy support was on.

hi,
Now I tried to disable the legacy support, and the dmraid -rE from the existing 32bit system and now:
IT WORKS!
thanks for the hint!

so menu for dell inspiron 5423 14z is:
disable DRST
enable UEFI
disable Legacy support
disable raid configuration with dmraid -rE for the sdd device
while installation select "do something else"
then one can select the ssd as systemdrive for installation
create there an ext2 partition with mountpoint /

further advices (to reduce powerconsumption):
disable (if the computer has one) the Radeon HD 7550M/7570M/7650M graphics card
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/1173393
insert following lines before "exit 0" in /etc/rc.local:
echo IGD > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch

is there a central point, where I can put this documentation
cheers and thanks
Johannes
