Feedback on the Lenovo ThinkPad T440

Asked by Benjamin Schultz

The RealTek Wireless card is unsupported in 12.04, 13.04 and 13.10. I haven't seen anyone able to get it working in Ubuntu. The system is available with an intel 7260 card, which is supported. The hardware spec on this page should be changed to reflect this.

Hello Benjamin,

I've linked the corresponding bug for you,
unfortunately, this wireless card support is not in 3.8 kernel
but it's in 3.11, you could give it a try.

For the certificate of Lenovo Thinkpad T440,
they're only certified with Pre-Install Ubuntu[0],
therefore stock images may not work on them.

Hi Po-Hsu Lin,
Thanks for your response and clarification. I think I may have been unclear., though. The realtek card listed in the hardware here(http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201310-14260/components/) is unsupported, even in 3.11, but the intel 7260 (which is an optional upgrade) is. I wonder if lenovo was aware of this and shipped a model with the intel chip to canonical?
Best,
Ben

Hello Benjamin,

For both of the Realtek (10EC:818B) and Intel (8086:08b1) wireless controllers you mentioned, they work with pre-installed Ubuntu, it means that they could be supported by using proprietary drivers provided by hardware vendors.

On the other hand, they might not be supported with stock Ubuntu images.
This is also the reason why T440 was only awarded the status of "Certified Pre-Install for Ubuntu" not "Certified for Ubuntu"

Hope this answers your question.
If you think the certification status on http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/ is confusing, please don't hesitate to leave us some feedback.
Thanks
Sam
