Feedback on the Asus X55U

Asked by anon_user

Have this notebook in version with 320 GB.. Ubuntu 12.04(3.2.0-41 kernel, drivers from manufacturer) is preinstalled. Randomly freezes(full kernel freeze, Alt+SysRq+R,E,I,S,U,B does not work), wifi works bad, Unity is very(!) laggy with this configuration..
and...

I cannot understand why Ubuntu is preinstalled on so bad configuration. AMD-drivers is really BAD. Tried Opensuse,Kubuntu,Xubuntu, Ubuntu with different kernels from 3.0 to 3.13).. An issue still.. It seems to be kernel-related. Windows8.1 are working well at same laptop. Hope the problem will be solved soon. Thanks

tried kubuntu on this laptop one day ago. fresh install. linux kernel 3.14.1 with no third-party programs or drivers(everything worked with kernel drivers). experienced a full freeze again. so it is linux-related issue(tried all kernels from 3.0 to 3.14 on different linux distros).

Hello,
Since we don't have the hardware,
I will suggest you to open a bug for this, it will be helpful to get it fixed.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

Another suggestion is to install the proprietary video driver.
Sometimes it could solve the freeze problem.

Good Luck.

Hmm... that's odd
Then I think you would need to open a bug. Since the one you linked here is pretty old.
And this issue might be hardware specific.

Another possibility is that this could be a hardware issue (e.g. broken memory... etc)
You could run memtest to check the memory.

Cheers.

cypressyew, i have checked EVERYTHING(and Win8.1 works great on the same laptop). I think it's hardware-specific, because the windows 8 power management system(cmd.exe, 'powercfg -energy') says that the hardware has known problems with PCI-E ASPM, and it is turned off). Will check this within 2 days.

PCI-E ASPM was disabled by kernel, so the problem is NOT resolved..

so i suspect hard lockups may be caused by anacron(already turn it off).

Hello fastinfader,
Sorry for you still having this issue.

But again,
I would strongly recommend you to open a bug.
It's difficult to get it fixed here, however, you will have a bigger chance to have it fixed by reporting it.
Please use "ubuntu-bug linux" command to report it in your terminal.

It seems the problem solved. I'm using Kubuntu 14.04 now (Linux kernel v3.13) with no any freezes.
