Feedback on the Dell Optiplex 9020

Asked by Johnlai

Hi,
I am dual booting ubuntu on my optiplex 9020 with windows 7 but am having multiple issues. Firstly, I cant get the network working (no wireless or Ethernet connection) even though I know there is nothing wrong with the hardware ie. everything works ok in windows 7. The second problem is ubuntu is not detecting my second monitor. However, it will project the same image on the second monitor, but ubuntu only shows one monitor is connected.

Thanks
John

I had to install the e1000e driver for the NIC to get this to work - it is available from:
http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-032514.htm

Just download the tar.gz file, extract and run make install, followed by modprobe e1000e - NIC should then start working.

Beware though - if you update your kernel (most likely after a clean install), you will most likely have to do this again...

Hello Paul,

Which version of Ubuntu are you using?
I do a quick test here, some Ethernet controllers (e.g. Intel i217-LM) are not supported in 3.2 kernel
So it does not work in 12.04 / 12.04.1 stock image.

Can you run:
lspci -nn | grep Ether
And paste the result here? It will be helpful to know which device it is.

And for your second question,
can you switch the "Mirror displays" option off in the "Display" utility from "System Settings"?
Thanks

Apologies Paul and Po-Hsu for the delay in getting you feedback. I've been away from work for the past week due to medical reasons and won't be back for another four days, so I won't be able to have a look at this until then. Many thanks to you both for taking the time out to help solve this problem and I'll let you know the results as soon as I can.

ok, being a noob to linux i didn't realise that you needed to modprobe after installing the driver. this did the trick and it's now working. after getting the network to work, i was able to download and install the graphics drivers using 'additional drivers' in the systems settings tab. however, i couldn't configure the two displays using the 'displays' tab in the systems settings, so i used the AMD catalyst control center app to properly configure it. many thanks to you both for your help as this was a very frustrating problem. cheers, john.
