Feedback on the Dell Vostro 3360

Asked by Veronika Ulychny

Hi,
Just bought the dell vostro 3360 laptop.
During the install of ubuntu 12.04.2 I had to disable the bluetooth to make wifi work.

After the installation, the wifi stopped working.
I tried to activate the BROADCOM STA driver, but the activation failed.
The ethernet adapter wasn't functional either.

I saw that this laptop was considered certified with 12.04, and the it's wifi chip should be (or was) supported.
Is there anything I can do to fix the wifi?

I tried http://askubuntu.com/questions/175104/how-do-i-install-bcm43142-wireless-drivers-for-dell-vostro-3460-3560/175115#175115 but this did't work for me.

Thanks,
Veronika.

Hello Veronika,
yes, Dell Vostro 3360 has been awarded the status of Certified for Ubuntu (12.04.2).
But the hardware of your laptop is slightly different from the one in our database.

But don't worry!
The reason why you cannot activate the Broadcom STA driver is that it needs network connection to download the proprietary driver.
And for your Ethernet connection, system update is needed, you'll need network connection as well.

Possible solutions:
* If your Wifi is available during the installation, you could tick the "Download updates while installing" option to get the system updated.
* Or, if you can get a USB-Ethernet adapter, you can install the proprietary driver and update the system.
* Or, download the latest 3.5 (3.5.0-36.57) kernel from another computer, copy these files to your laptop and install them.
Steps:
1. On your laptop , press Ctrl + Alt + t to open a terminal window, run
arch
If it shows x86_64, please download these files from another computer:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/142850451/linux-headers-3.5.0-36_3.5.0-36.57_all.deb
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/142850232/linux-headers-3.5.0-36-generic_3.5.0-36.57_amd64.deb
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/142850230/linux-image-3.5.0-36-generic_3.5.0-36.57_amd64.deb

Otherwise, please download these files instead:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/142850451/linux-headers-3.5.0-36_3.5.0-36.57_all.deb
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/142850455/linux-headers-3.5.0-36-generic_3.5.0-36.57_i386.deb
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/142850453/linux-image-3.5.0-36-generic_3.5.0-36.57_i386.deb

2. Back to your laptop, please create an empty folder called FOO on your desktop and copy these files into it.
3. Press Ctrl + Alt + t , run:
cd ~/Desktop/FOO
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
(If you gave the new directory another name, please replace FOO with it.)
Afterward, reboot your laptop, and the Ethernet should be working now.
Good luck!
