realtek wireless not recognized Lenovo e430

Asked by Robert Lundquist

I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Lenovo e430. I knew that this wireless was
not supported for Ubuntu before installation.

I just wanted to know if anyone has come up with a solution to enable wireless networking?
If not, would there be a Intel wireless card that I can purchase and install that will enable this
and is compatible with the e430?

I can't say officially, especially with regards to an installable WIFI card, as Lenovo has a habit of actually burning into the firmware of their machines a list of "acceptable" internal cards.

What you CAN do, however, is look online for ideas about what wifi usb dongles work. I have a Thinkpad x201 with a bad internal wifi card (it's an old machine, and it likes to burn up wifi cards), so I have resorted to using dongles for wireless. I use this one:

Tenda W311M: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Device/Tenda_W311M

It took a little fiddling to get the right driver installed, and some minor hacking of udev rules to make sure that when I plug it in, the driver for my onboard wifi is unloaded before the ralink driver is loaded.

But it works like a champ. There are many of them that will work with more or less fiddling. Just search for "Ubuntu WiFi USB" or something similar and you should get plenty of answers.

Can you help with this problem?
