Dell Vostro 3700: 2 year old bug

Asked by Michael Leetz

Hello!

There is a 2 year old bug, which made it impossible to install all versions of Ubuntu after 10.04 Lucid: the system freezes, when the laptop is working on battery power. There is a great discussion around this bug in launchpad, but nothing has changed all the time. Maybe the developers of Ubuntu don't even know, that this bug exists. It would be a great help, if you would have in focus this bug and eliminate him in the coming version of Ubuntu. I think, the priority is high, because the Dell Vostro 3700 is marked as "Ubuntu certified".

Here are the links to the bug on launchpad:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/656745

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1030992

And another problem: I couldn't test, if the bug exists in Ubuntu 12.10, because the x-server doesn't start, when I try to start the live-dvd of 12.10 beta. This must have something to do with the noveau driver (my model has a Nvidia card).

But the bug above belongs to all Versions of the Dell Vostro 3700: with and without a separate graphic card.

I would be very thankful, if you could give me a short answer, that you received my message. Thank you!

Redards, Michael Leetz

This bug is still present in Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 2. The Vostro 3700 is marked as "Ubuntu certified" for all latest versions of Ubuntu, although 2 years there exits a critical bug in the power management, which make it impossible to work with this notebook under Ubuntu. Why anyone doesn't answer me?

I'm not a very experienced linux user, but I'm willing to help to solve this problem. If anybody could give me an instruction, how to create a bug report? But I can't install 12.10 Beta 2, because I'm working still with Ubuntu 10.04.
I installed the actual beta version on an usb device. Answer, please.

Looks like you found two bugs already, but just in case, here is a direct link to file a bug via lauchpad manually:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+filebug

It is preferred, however, that you use ubuntu-bug to file bugs.

Also, try the latest isos for 12.10. It was my understanding that the nouveau driver issue causing the blank screen has been fixed.

Thank you for your answer.

No, the noveau driver issue hasn't been fixed. There exist several bug reports, for instance this:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1048701

https://bugs.launchpad.net/nouveau/+bug/1049176

But it is possible to boot the beta version, if you delete "quiet splash" in the boot options.

I think, it makes no sense, to create a new bug report, if the problem exists already 2 years and is well documented in the bug reports, to which I linked. I will try the latest isos for 12.10.

Is this an issue in 12.10 or 13.04?

Dear Jeff Lane,

suddenly this is still an issue in 12.10 and 13.04. I tested 13.04 yesterday as a live system from an usb-device: the system freezes on battery power as in 12.10 and before. The only useful solution I could find is this one described here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/656745

You can find the solution here in comment #50:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/656745/comments/50

If you have further questions: I can answer only in 2 weeks. Then I also will install 13.04 and could give you more information.
