Feedback on the Dell Studio XPS

Asked by yurx cherio

I've been having ubuntu (64 bit) installed on my Dell XPS Studio (8100, i7 860 (Lynnfield Nehalem), nVidia GeForce GT 220, 8Gb ram, fake (BIOS) RAID 1) for a couple of years now and it ran smoothly all versions from 10.04 until I installed 12.04. Since that I've been experiencing frequent system freezes forcing me to hard-reset the box. These symptoms didn't change despite of me trying numerous things e.g. trying to run 2D, reinstalling it clean to Xubuntu, using x-swat update for X and video, trying kernels 3.3.x, 3.4.x, etc.

The problem closely resembles the one described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/993187. It seems to be affecting hundreds of people rendering 12.04 un-usuable.

My question is whether there is more information on this problem. I am assuming that this must be one of the top-most issues on the priority list since it affects so many people and make the system unusable. This means that there has to be some information regarding what causes system freezes and how to mitigate them.

I would really appreciate any information on the issue.
Thank you!

The Dell XPS Studio 8100 is not certified with Ubuntu, so asking this question about Ubuntu Certification is not going to lead to any answers. If there is information about what to do to mitigate the systems freezes it will be in the bug report you mentioned, although I had a quick read and it looks like a root cause has not been found. Continuing to try and find an answer on e.g. http://askubuntu.com would be your best next step.

Can you help with this problem?
