Feedback on the Dell Latitude E6320

Asked by Smot

1. Live CDs do not boot if the E6320 is seated in a docking station - the screen blanks and the system locks up.

2. Live CD for 11.10 64-bit fails to load - error "System V runlevel compatibily" is given and the loading process halts. I'm still investigating boot options to avoid this.

The pre-installed version of 10.10 works perectly.

Configuration: Core i7, 8Gb RAM, 500Gb disk

More info:
I've had some minor success with 11.10 64-bit live CD by adding boot parameter "aic7xxx.aic7xxx=no_probe". I've no idea what this does, but tried it by looking at the help that comes up if the boot sequence is interrupted.

It took ages to load, but did eventually get to a desktop. Since the laptop is factory fresh, I'll try installing it tomorrow from this point, to see what happens. At least I can easily restore the whole thing to factory state in an hour!

Spoke (wrote) too soon. Using "aic7xxx.aic7xxx=no_probe" has intermittent success. It booted once yesterday, but has failed twice now this morning.

Back to square one. :-(

Even more info:
I got fed up with waiting 10 minutes to boot off a CD each time I wanted to try something out, so I created a bootable USB flash pen.

Guess what? It worked perfectly! No boot errors, and everything seems to work as it should.

I've now installed 11.10 64-bit, and booting from with the laptop both docked and undocked works fine.

So I think there are now two basic issues:
1. It doesn't boot from CD when it's docked (I can live with that as day-to-day booting from hard disk is fine)
2. I have a dodgy CD drive! It's a brand new E6320 so Dell may be getting a call for on-site maintenance......

I'll keep an eye on things for the next few days & report back.

Well. All has worked perfectly now since my last post, so I'm fairly sure that the key problem was/is caused by a dodgy CD/DVD drive.

I'll close this one off.
