Feedback on the Lenovo Thinkpad T520 - DVD not working

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T520 running Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. It contains an HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT33N DVD drive. The DVD drive is not detected by the OS at all. This is a dual boot system and the DVD drive works fine when running Windows XP. The DVD shows correctly in the BIOS, and is set as the first boot device. When I try to boot from a live CD I get "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system".

Do I need any special drivers or to change a specific setting to get this DVD to work?

Hi Neil,

The system we certified for 11.04 has the same DVD drive and we didn't encounter any problems. Of course, we certified it with 32-bit Ubuntu so I just need to ask if you've tried with the 32-bit image? If it works but you're not satisfied with using 32-bit on your system then you might also try the 64-bit image of Ubuntu 11.10 which is due for release very soon.

Hi Brendan,

Thank you for your speedy response. I downloaded the 32-bit image, used it to create a Live USB stick and booted from that. Unfortunately I could still not see the DVD drive, even with a disk in it.

I also tried a bootable Windows CD, and that started fine. It seems that the DVD drive works when the laptop is booted into Windows, and also before it boots into any operating system. The problem is only with Ubuntu 11.04, both 32-bit and 64-bit.

What other information could I send that may help you diagnose this problem?

Hi Neil,

That's quite strange. Have you been able to try 11.10? If not, we're about to do testing for 11.10 so should know soon if the system we have works well. In the meantime can you send the full output of 'lspci -vv' for now?

I created live USB sticks for each of the following versions, and booted from each of them. None of them could see the DVD drive.

Hi Brendan

Further googling on the "TEST_UNIT_READY failed (err_mask=0x2)" error mentioned above revealed [1,2,3] that this is known problem with SATA 3 under Ubuntu. Some more searching suggested that this could be fixed by changing the BIOS SATA setting from "Compatibility" mode to "AHCI" mode. I did this, and have tested both reading from, and writting to CDs, and the drive appears to be working fine.
