Feedback on the Lenovo Thinkpad W510

Asked by Drakej on 2011-09-04

No support for fingerprint reader, WiMax, EVDO antenna, poor support for port replicator (dock), and brightness controls are broken (although this is mentioned).

The deal breaker is really the poor support for port replicators. I like the ability to dock and undock my laptop to essentially turn it into a desktop and so far with Ubuntu I can't find a way to make to consistently change the active monitors and resolutions. On top of that the harddrive has to be manually unmounted and mounted each time which is dangerous since you may forget.

I use Ubuntu at work on my desktop but right now I can't use it on this machine. I question the fact that it's certified with so many of the hardware devices being unsupported.

Unfortunately, your list of things are not items we currently test for certification purposes. Please see the attached FAQ which provides some information on what does get tested during certification.

Also, starting with Oneiric, we are introducing the Ubuntu Friendly programme that will hopefully being to address some of these items. This program will allow people to test and report on their experience using Ubuntu on a wide variety of systems. Also, anyone is free to download the source code for Checkbox, the system testing tool and create new tests to address new testing areas (such as your docking station/port replicator, fingerprint reader, etc)
FAQ #1540: “What is tested as part of Certification”.

Can you help with this problem?
