Feedback on the Lenovo Thinkpad T410

Asked by Dennis Mathews

Natty on Thinkpad T410 ( 2522-AT7 ) cannot resume from suspend. Occasionally it has, but most times it just goes blank, power and CAPS lock LEDs keep flashing. The laptop just freezes, not reachable by SSH or pingable. I've tried Ubuntu ( Unity ), Ubuntu Classic and classic without effects with the same result. I've had the same result with BIOS 1.32 and now on 1.38.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for letting us know this. We didn't encounter such a problem in testing, so it would be helpful if you could run 'lspci -v' from the terminal and paste the output here so we can get an idea of which configuration you're using. This may make the difference.

BTW, if your caps lock LED is flashing that probably means a kernel panic has occurred during resume.

It does appear your WiFi chip is slightly different - the T410 we tested had an Intel Ultimate N 6300 chip whereas yours is Advanced N 6200. I can't be sure this is where the different lies and it seems in most other respects your model is identical to the one we tested. I'll double check that we didn't experience any suspend/resume problems with this system and let you know.

Brendan, this appears to be something software related ( settings maybe ) as a fresh installation fixed the problem. I can suspend and resume without a problem now. I'll just have to install software and make changes incrementally to see if I can isolate the problem.

Found the problem. It was VirtualBox. Every time. Reproducible 100%. Tried both the OSE one ( 4.0.4-dfsg-1ubuntu4.1 ) from Ubuntu software center and Virtualbox-4.1_4.1.0-73009-Ubuntu-Natty from virtualbox.org. I don't have to be running it, just have to have it installed and the Ubuntu ( host ) will freeze on suspend and won't wake up required a hard reset.

Hi Dennis,

Well thanks for investigating! I can say right now we do not test suspend/resume with VirtualBox installed, but knowing that it can cause problems is food for thought.

Thanks!
