Feedback on the Lenovo W701 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Asked by WayOutThere on 2011-05-09

The comments that to get the video to work properly a user must install the proprietary NVidia driver is misleading. I tried that five (5) times and each time the OS would not boot into the GUI environment. I had to settle on using the OOTB video drivers which do work although they do not take advantage of the of hardware.

I would be happy to assist in getting better drivers for this laptop (W701 i7 Q820 w 12Gb RAM) working properly.

Hello,

Could you let me know whether you used the "recommended" NVidia drivers, or the "version 173" ones?

If you tried the recommended and they failed to work, you might want to try the version 173 drivers.

I would very much appreciate if you could report on your results either way.

Thanks!

- Daniel

If you can provide the output of lspci, so we can see exactly which graphics card you have then we could look into this in more detail.

I tried the recommended drivers.

I have Synaptic loaded - what would help you figure this out - a list of what video drivers I have installed?

I can't afford to have the system not bootable.

As I mentioned we need to see the output of lspci so that we can see which of these two graphics cards you have:

Video nVidia Corporation G92 [Quadro FX 3800M]
Video nVidia Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M]

Set the wrong status

I can also supply a list of what's installed - just tell me the command to type.

OK. You don't have either of the cards we've certified this system with:

nVidia Corporation G92 [Quadro FX 2800M]

That is of course not saying the card shouldn't work.

WayOutThere (kevin-b-crocker) said : #11

ok - interesting, I didn't change the hardware - just bought the laptop with what Lenovo put in it. It was a recent purchase - about a month ago, so obviously, Lenovo has changed the video hardware.

WayOutThere (kevin-b-crocker) said : #12

would it help to see a list of what is installed - I didn't install the proprietary drivers as far as I know - but Synaptic sure looks like some of them got installed

Hi - more likely is that Lenovo just sell the same system with a number of different graphics cards. You can see that we certified systems with two different ones. It just happens that yours is not one of them. Sorry about that.

I would recommend you Google for something like 'nvidia 2800 on ubuntu 10.04' to find answers. This really isn't the best forum to find support for this issue.

Can you help with this problem?
