Feedback on the Dell Precision T1600

Asked by Mathew Sunil Augustine

We have Dell Precision T1600 with Nvidia Qudro 600 GPU installed with Ubuntu 10.10. It got installed and all the drivers are taken auomatically. But I have some issues. After the installation while rebooting the workstation it got hanged and I rebooted the system manually. But now every time I press reboot it will hang. But while shutting down there is no such issue. Please help me here.

Hi Matthew,

Two possible issues here. The first on is that this system is certified for a pre-installed image only. That is it must have had Ubuntu installed on it when purchased from Dell. Second is that your particular system has a different graphics card to the one we tested. If you could confirm whether or not the system had Ubuntu installed originally then we can go somewhere from there.

Thanks,

Hello Brendan,

Thanks for your reply. I didn't got Ubuntu pre-installed on my T1600s. Dell is only giving Windows 7 on it. Even they told they won't give support for any Linux on these workstations except T7500. I have installed CentOS 5.6 now and it is working without any trouble. But I felt it is not as flexible as Ubuntu especially when it comes to multimedia and device support.

Hi Matthew,

We can consider this question answered then, since you aren't using a configuration that was certified with a 'stock' Ubuntu release (i.e. one you just download from the Ubuntu website).

I would suggest though to:

Switch to a tty: Ctrl+Alt+F1
Login with you normal credentials
Type sudo shutdown now -r (this restarts the system despite the name of the command)
See if any messages appear that could suggest why it has become stuck.

If it doesn't become stuck then you can always type that command to restart cleanly - though I'm pretty sure the Restart options in Gnome use this command directly anyway.
FAQ #1523: “Where can I find a Pre-install/Manufacturer image”.

Can you help with this problem?
