Feedback on the Dell Vostro 3500

Asked by Dmitry Kolesnikov

Hello.

I have Dell Vostro 3500 with nVidia GeForce 310M.
I use Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 with two proprietary drivers, nvidia and broadcom-sta.

Almost everything works fine, except one big issue: screen brightness get out of my control. I cannot adjust brightness level, it´s too bright. (And it was too dark before I install nvidia driver). When I press brightness increase/decrease buttons, I see Gnome notification but actual backlight brightness is not changed.

How can I fix this problem?

Thanks for providing your feedback about this particular model. The Dell Vostro 3500 comes in many variations. Your system contains an nVidia video card whereas the one certified contains an Intel one. Unfortunately, there is currently no way for you to know from looking at the website. We are working to make this clearer in our website.

Update: I found proper solution for this issue.
In /etc/X11/xorg.conf Section "Device" add one line:

Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

After restarting Xorg everything works Ok.
Probably this information should be useful for developers.

In 11.04 this workaround does not work anymore :(
