Historically, the number of machines that came with fingerprint readers were few, mainly reserved for Business Class machines. More and more, we are seeing biometric devices appear on consumer level machines.

Fingerprint readers have never been very well supported in Linux by the OEM who sells the machine or by the IHV who makes the fingerprint reader. Users have had varying luck getting these devices to work under Linux in general and support for them overall has been spotty.

We realize that the desire for a working fingerprint reader and are working with our OEM partners to get this support into Ubuntu, however, at this time there is no real time frame for when that will happen.

For now, asking around on the Ubuntu forums:

or Ask Ubunut:

Will put you in touch with other users who may have already solved this problem.
