Why is Transmission so slow?

Asked by bp

Transmission never seems to be able to download more than 10 kb/s, with correct NAT settings, even though it keeps on happily and promptly uploading data mantaining a constant 50 kb/s upload rate. Azureus, on the same computer with the same connection under the same settings*, regularly peaked at 150 kb/s.

Yes, uploading helps keep a torrent alive, but at some point in the near future I'd also like to be able to download the damn files. :)

*or at least, the same, small subset of settings the two programs have in common.

High upload speeds take some bandwith out of download bandwith.
Limit your per torrent or global upload speed from Transmission Preferences.

You may have to experiment a bit to get optimal values or use Azureus wizard ones.

There are a lot of reasons for BitTorrent transfers to go slowly.

http://trac.transmissionbt.com/wiki/SlowSpeeds has a checklist of items to look at to diagnose the problem.
