DVD won't play -- error message not clear

Asked by Joe

I click to play a DVD - get the message "Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not have the appropriate plug-ins to handle it. Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media.

I have Ubuntu 7.04, and the DVD is a mainstream movie DVD (Road to Perdition by Dreamworks USA).

How do I find the appropriate plug-in?

Also, I am brand new to Linux of any flavor - I was a Windows drone until this week. I need pretty simplified instructions for how to install.

Thanks,

Sam - thanks for the answer.

Here's what I get:

root@INSPIRON:/home/jej1216# sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libdvdcss2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libdvdcss2 has no installation candidate
root@INSPIRON:/home/jej1216#

I did a search for libdvdcss2 and found a site - downloaded the rpm to a folder on my desktop and got it to create a folder in My Docs called libdvdcss2-1.2.9.

When I run the commands you recommend in terminal, I get the exact same message as above.

Did I download the wrong file? Or do I need to run terminal from the libdvdcss2-1.2.9 folder?

I am still having problems.

Thanks,

Thanks for the question.

libdvdcss2 is not part of the official ubuntu repository anymore. However, it can be installed from the Medibuntu repositiory. Here are instructions how to access the repository:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

I hope this helps
