totem freezes on startup

My totem (xine/gstreamer) has decided it wants to freeze upon loading. With the Xine backend, the last debug messages are as follows:

video_out_xv: using Xv port 355 from adaptor NV17 Video Texture for hardware colour-space conversion and scaling.
video_out_xv: this adaptor supports the yuy2 format.
video_out_xv: this adaptor supports the yv12 format.
x11osd: unscaled overlay created (XShape mode).
video_out: thread created

With GStreamer, the only debug output is "sh: jackd: not found".

As it simply freezes rather than crashing I'm not sure what other useful information I can provide for a bug report - any help would be useful.
