using latest "stable" tomdroid 0.6.0 (as of today) from launchpad.net:

Steps:

[Settings]
  Service: Online Synchronization
  Server: https://one.ubuntu.com/notes

[Authenticate]

"Completing authentication. Please wait..."
"The connection to the server has failed, please check that the address you entered is correct."

[OK]

As far as I can tell, the difference between 0.5.0 and 0.6.0 are as follows:
- The service "Tomboy Web" has been renamed to "Online Synchronization"
- authentication now fails about 3x faster. Great performance improvement!
