recovering files in thunderbird and mozilla

Asked by tim

I was running a dual boot of windows xp with ubuntu 10.04...however I uninstalled ubuntu. Under Ubuntu I was running thunderbird mail and mozilla firefox of which both of them I had backed-up the files. There is information from both these I would like to retrieve...under thunderbird I want my users settings to set up an account in Windows 7 and well as I want my mail, and templates. Under firefox I was using an addon called scrapebook, and had saved a tons of web pages. Can I somehow run an installation of ubuntu and get this information? I had tried something a few months backed but was lock out of these files because they were user protected...under my old ubuntu user name and password.

How did you back up the files did you zip them or just copy?;
Are they on a cd or an encryped disk?

can I work from the live cd to get these files up and running or do I have to reinstall ubuntu somewhere?

The live CD should be fine although you may have to manually mount the drive as current user with read/write/execute permissions then try accessing the files with your old user-name and password.
try asking for a walk-through here http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=ubuntu-uk
and reading a lot of tutorials like here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=283131
 to get read permissions try moving your files onto a FAT32 formatted drive to bypass any permission issues.
   BUT if the files are on an encrypted EXT4 drive and you don't know the user-name and password you may want to book time on the jaguar; http://www.nccs.gov/jaguar/.

So like with thunderbird mail....there is no way to get the settings, and information that is stored in the ubuntu files of thunderbird into window files of thunderbird?

"reading a lot of tutorials" as you said....that is the problem, who has time to read lots of tutorials....so then the bottom line is there is no way to put the information that is in ubuntu thunderbird files into thunderbird installed on windows?
