Creating duplicate Terminator applications in Gnome3

Asked by Leo Simmons

I'm trying to get several windows of Terminator to be appear as different applications to the Ubuntu 18 Gnome3 Dock. Details about use case can be seen in the Ask Ubuntu issue here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1188087/creating-distinct-duplicates-of-applications-in-unity.

I'm trying to get this to work by copying /usr/bin/terminator into usr/bin/t2, usr/bin/t3, etc (and adding sys.path.append("/usr/share/terminator") to each copied script to avoid an ImportError for terminatorlib), etc but Gnome3/the Dock still considers all the duplicates to be the same application. I've gone so far as to add comments in each copied script thinking that Gnome3 might be diffing the executables used to start the applications in the Dock to see which are the same.

Any ideas on how I can get these windows to show up as different applications?
