Feature Request: Open With... Menu Option

Asked by Why not on 2016-10-27

I use terminator for browsing newsfeeds (newsbeuter), reddit (rtv), twitter (rainbow stream), and hangouts (hangups), I often come across URLs that I want to open in a program other than my browser, such as image files (eog), videos (mpv), youtube links (mpv), etc... but terminator only opens links with my default browser. It would greatly extended funcionality if there was a submenu which would allow the user to add alternative programs for handling links.

For example,

Open With >
                       MPV
                       VLC
                       EOG
                       Evince
                       Chromium
                       Firefox

Feature Requests should be raised as bugs, which are later turned into "Wishlist" items. Questions are not the place to suggest enhancements.

As a limited audience item, this would have to be done as a plugin.

Hmmm. Actually, as it would only appear when hovering over hyperlinks, I may reconsider it having to be a plugin.

You could try doing what I did, even before using terminator.

I wrote a bash script which I use as a custom browser command. The script looks at the extension of the URL and decides which app to open it in.

So images get opened in viewnior, videos and audio in mplayer. Anything that isn't matched gets sent to firefox.

I wget images and videos to /tmp and then delete them after they have been viewed and closed.

Hope this helps.
