Splitting across panes

Asked by pat rick

Hopefully I can make this make sense (and doesn't have an obvious answer I've missed):

If I start terminator and do a vertical split then a horizontal in one of the two sides, I now have a three pane setup such that the left half is quartered while the right is still a half. I accidentally closed my right half pane, so now I have two horizontal halves. Is there any way to get it back to the prior configuration without closing a second pane? IE, every time I try a vertical split I can only quarter one of the halves, rather than make quarters of the existing halves.

Possibly have a way to group two panes and split a third off from both, instead of only being able to split a single pane? Otherwise the best I can figure is closing a second pane so I'm down to one again then doing two splits anew, which, saving work, isn't the end of the world but seems there'd be a more elegant way.

The simple two step way around this is to 1) split vertically as you already mention, then 2) drag half sized pane to the bottom half of the left quarter sized pane. ( you use the title bar of the pane to effect this drag in case you weren't aware.)

I'm unaware of any "gouping", or undo that would give the effect you want.
