Category tree disappeared

For a long time I had a wide column of tasks (with corresponding category and priority) showing on the left, and a narrow column showing all categories in a tree on the right. Then one day the category tree disappeared, and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get it to show again. I >can< get it to show as a completely separate window, but not one which joins vertically with the task column. I'm not a software engineer, no doubt I'm using incorrect terminology. I hope you can help anyway, thanks, I appreciate your efforts!

When you add a view, it starts out floating, but you then drag it around on the window, and you drop it in place in a number of different locations based on the layout you want. So, you just get to the "separate window" part and then drag that separate window and drop it where you want it.
