Synchronizing task effort on more computers

Asked by Mira Slunicko

I use Task Coach namely for tracking of the time spent on individual tasks. I work usually on a desktop but sometimes on a notebook. Is there a wqay how to track the same task on both computers together ? E.g. export task subtree to a text file and import it on another PC.

I tried export/import via csv file but
1. imported tasks are added as a new task, not merged
2. time spent on a task is not transferred

Is there a way how to solve this ? If not, I would appreciate some possibility of synchronization between Task coach on different PCs.

Thanks

Mira

There are several ways to do this. The main thing to know is that the same .tsk file with all the data can be opened on multiple machines, even if they are different systems (Mac, Win, Linux). I use DropBox (a freemium cloud sync service). Because I have my .tsk file saved in my DropBox folder, all my computers that I have logged into DropBox have a copy of the same file all the time, so as long as I quit Task Coach on each machine when I leave it, I can open it on the other machines just fine. You can also use any of several competing services like Ubuntu One, SpiderOak, or even the totally free and open system OwnCloud which runs on your own server or some services are available that use OwnCloud but offer service to general users.

Short answer: sync using some cloud-based service OR use a portable option like keeping your .tsk file on a USB flash drive which you move between computers.

For the future, there is a plan to be able to open the .tsk file on multiple systems at once, so no more need to quit each one before opening the other.

Cheers,
Aaron
