Variants of kanji?

Asked by David

Hello,

It seems to me that the option to show "Variations" of characters in "Program->Preferences->Character entries->Display" does not work. I have checked this option and, for example, if I search for the kanji 繋, I expect that in the detailed view, the variant 繫 is shown somewhere, but I can't see it anywhere. Or for the kanji 来, its variant 來 is shown.
It seems that the information is available in the kanjidic2 file under this form:
<variant var_type="jis208">45-72</variant>

By the way, I use the Debian packages on a Debian sid machine, if that can help. (that is, version 0.9.2-2).

Hi,

Nice, first report from the fresh new Debian packages! :)

Indeed, this information is not used yet from the kanjidic. Instead Tagaini uses similar information (but arguably not as complete) from kanjivg. For instance, if you lookup 人, you will see 亻, 入 and 乂 as variations.

I agree it would be nice to use the information from kanjidic as well. Unfortunately it various totally unconsistant codes instead of doing simple references to characters, which makes things complicated - but definitely not impossible. I'll try to get that in for 0.9.3.
