Incorrect kanji components for 期 ?

Asked by Nick Voronin

Details for kanji 期 show:

Components
其: that
肉 (月) : meat

while clicking on right part leads to 月 (moon). Which is probably correct.

A bug?

Hi,

This should actually be correct - the first kanji shows the meaning of
the component, and the one in parentheses shows its graphical
representation. In 期 the right 月 is actually a graphical variation of
肉 (and not the legit 月), so this makes sense. One could however argue
that the user should rather be redirected to the first kanji when
clicking on the component. Also, I am surprised that 月 in 期 stands for
肉, considering the meaning of 期. This may be a mistake in the data and
needs to be checked.

Yes, I'm aware that moon and meat look very similar as part of other kanji. Wiktionary says it's moon in 期 . On the other hand in 肋 (rib) it's meat, but in Tagaini Jisho it's exactly the same as with 期 . It says "meat" but links to "moon". Looks like common problem.

Hi,

Both kanji have the same description for the 月 part, i.e. its graphical representation is 月 but its semantics is 肉. This looks correct for 肋, but I am not sure about 期.

As for the click behavior, I am not sure how this could be improved - any suggestion is welcome.

I would gladly suggest improvement, but I still don't understand why clicking on what is subtitled as "meat" leads to kanji with different meaning. :)

If the point was to show form, as close to presented in given kanji as possible, then it's probably correct (even if unexpected for me) behaviour. If the link is established by meaning, then current behaviour is wrong, and click should open 肉 (or better yet variant of 肉 - ⺼, which is different from 月).

Well, anyway you are right that it does not make much sense to click on "meat" and end on "moon". I will try to come with a better behavior for 0.9.3. Thanks for reporting this.

I have pushed a (hopefully) better handling of such cases in the git repo. This will also be in the upcoming 0.9.3. Please do not hesitate to open an issue on https://github.com/Gnurou/tagainijisho/issues (developments takes place there now) if you think this can be further improved.

Can you help with this problem?
