Which is the best way to manage your study list?

Asked by plafue

Hi!

I've been using Tagaini for a while now, and i was wondering which is the best way to manage the study list. I find it difficult to add/remove items from this "invisible list". Also i found it difficult insert/remove lists out of the study list, so that i can study based on different topics selected by myself and not only based by search.

Am i missing something here?

Besides that this software is incredibly helpful, and the context sensitive kanji popup is a great help!

Thanks in advance

Hi,

The idea behind the study list is that it will become big (several thousands of items) so quickly that any attempt to organize it manually is futile. Therefore, the items you add to it are those that make relevance for your study (either because you already know them, or because you want to remember them). That's it.

This information is very useful to the program though, as it helps it stressing out items you want to study in the results.

Although it makes little sense to display it, the study list is not "invisible" - you can see it entirely by selecting the "studied" checkbox in the "study" search tab. Adding items is as simple as clicking the "studied" (red flag) or "already known" (green flag) of the detailed view of right-click context menu. Same for removing items - however, it is not recommended to remove items from the study list - instead, mark them as "already known". That way Tagaini will know that you already master them and will not bother you with them anymore, excepted in rare occasions to check you really remember them. ;)

Sorting of your study data should be done through the tags and hierarchical lists, which are totally orthogonal from the concept of the study list, i.e. you can have items that are tagged while not being in your study list.

Always entering the same search terms can be bothering after a while, so you can use the "Sets" (which work like the bookmarks of your browser) to remember a given search under some label and recall it quickly. This is useful to quickly organize your items by tags, for instance.

This is just an example of how you can use all that. Tagaini is a tool that tries not to impose a particular learning method, but instead let you use its features as you want. Therefore it is up to you to decide which ones are relevant for your particular way of studying.

If my answer is not clear, please do not hesitate to ask more questions.

Can you help with this problem?
