Systemback live images don't boot

Asked by boomboom

Hi there,

I'm having a problem booting ISOs that systemback creates. When I boot from the ISO systemback has created, the usual systemback boot screen comes up (with the 10 seconds counter at the bottom). I select boot live (the first option), the counting stops, nothing happens for ~3 seconds, and then the 10 seconds counter starts again. Basically, systemback just restarts itself, and cannot boot into any option. The same thing happens if I select to boot into the installer. ANy of the four options cannot boot. I first saw this on my computer. Tested in a VM, same.
This started about a week ago. Before that I never had any issue booting from systemback ISOs.

Please advise.

Thanks

So you try to boot the Live system with BIOS (Syslinux). What is the source system (type, version, architecture) and what is the Systemback version? And if possible, please try to boot with UEFI (VirtualBox).
I need to reproduce the problem before I try to fix it.

Source system is Lubuntu 16.04 32bit.
I tried booting it in VirtualBox, same. Tried VMware, same.
Thanks for looking into this

Would you like me to upload my ISO to you somewhere so you can check it out?

Well, symptoms hide when visiting the doctor... :)
When I make my ISOs, I include user data. So, to upload you an ISO, I preferred to not have the user data in the ISO.

So, I created another one, excluding user data. Checked it, it works. Was a little stunned, since there wasn't an update to systemback in the interim, and I haven't changed anything else. The only thing that's left that might be causing this issue is the user data, as much as that sounds unlikely. So I created another ISO, including user data. Tested it, it works as well. I've tested these in a VM, as well as writing them to USB and booting my computer off them. Everything works as normal.

So, for now the issue has entirely disappeared. I had already deleted the old ISOs that didn't work, so there's nothing to analyze now. If I encounter this again, I'll write back here. Thanks for being ready to look into issues and quick responses.
