What does System Update do? Manual?

Asked by paul1149

I just clicked on System Update. I expected it would bring up some kind of dialog and maybe I could figure out what it would do, but instead it launched into some kind of ongoing process where 1/3 GB of data was downloaded. I didn't like this at all, but figured I needed to let it run at that point.

Is there a manual for this program? I am very impressed with it and wish I understood better what it can do.

Thanks.

The Systemback primarily is a system backup and restore applications. The "System upgrade" is an additional function, not a full featured and configurable system upgrade service. Just perform a normal, full system upgrade with some clean-up. This can be useful if you restore the system to an older restore point. So the user interaction should be avoided.
If you did not want to run the upgrade, just use a previous restore point to roll back this system modification.

Ok, thank you. I had just done an update, so I think not much was actually accomplished. But that's a significant thing to execute without a warning explanatory dialog, and I don't think that's wise. Is there a manual available. Thanks again.

This is a harmless and interruptible (especially at the beginning when updating the repository database) function. And if the modifications are not wanted, there is the system restoration. I do not think that user confirmation is needed (like system restoration). These are just normal apt-get and dpkg calls.

I don't think you're looking at this with the eyes of a newbie, to whom this kind of thing, unexplained, is daunting. Still no answer to my thrice-asked question about a manual.

Yes, but the every time popup-window warning things are irritating. I use this function every day, and I do not want this warning and confirmation dialog.
The good English-language documentation is sadly missing, yet. But the systemback-cli manual (man systemback-cli) is good enough for this function:
"upgrade current system
remove unnecessary files and packages"
These few words say it all, even if you are a new user in the Ubuntu/Debian world. The user interaction or thinking are unnecessary (except the kernels removing). That is the point.
But true, the basic knowledge of the system is beneficial. After all, this is a - deep - system application and each system files can impact.

True enough about popups. Actually, a hover bubble on the function's control button would be ideal IME. A little hint here and there would make the learning curve a whole lot flatter and increase you user base, AISI.

Anyway, thanks again for a great prog.

Blessings,
Paul
