how to set screen (X) resolution at boot time

Hi,
I used Systemback to create a live system on a USB thumb drive. Tested on several machines and worked well. I would like to install it on a new laptop, but fails to start up the X. Suspecting it detects wrongly the resolution. tried with several liveCD (Knoppix, Ubuntu, Xubuntu) and it work well, but not with the live system I created. I'm using Xubuntu 14.04 (LTS), graphics card are on both NVidia but on the new machine have a high resolution (retina) monitor. Any way to force the desired resolution at boot time like for example Knoppix cheat code "screen=1600x1200"?
