synapse-indicator keyboard shortcut - does not work

hello,
I have tried indicator-synapse, compiled myself from bzr, but failed so far activating it via keyboard shortcut.
I also tried to change the default configuration in source, but it does not seem to work at all...

It would be really nice if this could be fixed, I really would like to have a working keyboard activation.

I am on ubuntu 14.04 64it with all updates, running it in xfce4-panel with it's indicator plugin.
works great otherwise.
