Software Update Issue

Asked by Paulo Ferreira

Hello people,

I'm having a problem with my fresh installation of eOS, and it is about the Software & Updates menu.

Every time I install eOS I always go to the Software Updater to change the settings. In the Software & Updates window I do the following things in each tab.

Ubuntu software tab
I always leave it as it is. Everything by default

Software sources tab
I always enable the "Canonical Partners" and "Independent" options. Sometimes I also enable the Source Code options of the two.

Updates tab (this is where everything goes haywire)
I always enable the "Important security Updates (trusty-security)" and the "Recommended Updates (trusty-updates)" options and I don't change anything else in this tab. When I click the check-box to enable those two options they show the tick symbol as supposed but as soon as the tick symbol appears it disappears and I don't know if the options are enabled or not. After the clicks I open the terminal and always do the apt-get update. after updating the sources I get this message.

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

It seems that when I clicked those option I've enabled them again and created a duplicate entry in the config file.

My questions are.
If I don't enable them by clicking are they enabled by default? and if they are enabled by default why don't they show the tick symbol like the other options that are enabled?

Thanks in advance.

What is the output of the command

find /etc/apt -name '*.list' -exec bash -c 'echo -e "\n$1\n"; cat -n "$1"' _ '{}' \;

It might help identifying the root cause, if you could execute that command on a new-installed system before you start changing the settings, and again after doing your changes.

Don't really know what's going on with the launchpad... I tried to wrote a message but when I posted it, it said that I have to log in again... Woot.. anyway

after a new installation I wrote that code you gave me.
this is after the change in the update configuration
http://pastebin.com/mmKvT935

after the configuration
http://pastebin.com/uGEdxmW6

Oddly enough when I tried to make the changes everything seemed to be fine. Everything that was supposed to have the check mark, had the check mark.

So for now no problems. But don't really know why and I'm still clueless about that, the problem I've reported happened also in the past. On the 1st installation I had the same problem, maybe on a second installation the problem still remained but on the 3rd it was solved.

The only difference that I see is enabling the extras and partner repositories.
I also don't know why that error would have shown in the past, but is not there any more in a new installation.
If the problem has disappeared, you might set the status of the question document to 'solved'.

for now it seems to be solved. After a new Linux installation (Ubuntu and its derivatives) I always go to the software Updater and in the Updater tab I always enable trusty-security and trusty-updates and also the extras and partner repositories in the other Other software tab. But for now everything that was supposed to be enable are enabled by default.

Probably in a near future I'll install eOS again and I'll make a video if the reported problem shows up again.

I don't know if I'm allowed to ask about other problems in the same "post" but when I open the software centre the icon of any app is only a cog and when I click the "Turn on Recommendations" button it doesn't do anything.
There's a video to show what I mean

I have the same issue. I did a fresh install of eos 64bit on 2010 macbook pro, and the software and updates app under "other software" shows 7 checked marked boxes for "important security updates" and 6 checked marked boxes of "recommended security updates". And at updates tab important and recommended updates boxes and both unchecked and when I try to enable them it will ask for my password then it checks the box and immediately automatically unchecks the box. Any ideas?
