Scrambled views

Asked by Jim G

The windows that are opened by using the "F" keys (F1, F2, etc.), are scrambled when they open. A similar problem was resolved on this forum, but I can't find the actual answer. Please help.

There are two different issues with similar effects, but on different hardware and operating systems.

If you have an ATI graphics card and you are running Windows, you need to update your graphics card drivers to the latest version available on ATI/AMD's website:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
(Tip: On the page that opens after clicking "Go!", choose the second option, to download the drivers only.)

If you have an Intel graphics card and you are running Ubuntu or some other Linux distribution, you need to install "driconf" and disable texture tiling for Stellarium as described here:

Thanks for your prompt response.
I did download and attempted to install the updated driver.   However, in the process of installing, the size of my screen graphics became very large, so I aborted the process.
My screen size returned to normal after re-booting.
I opened Stellarium and I am able to view the sidebar windows, but I'm unable to navigate the program, as there is continual "flashing" on the screen.

Your continued assistance will be appreciated.
Sincerely,

Jim Gianoni

So, let me get this straight:
- you are running some kind of Windows;
- you have some kind of ATI Radeon graphics card;
- you have aborted the installation of a driver (generally not a good idea).

You can try switching Stellarium to window mode by pressing F11 and see if the flicker will disappear. If you are running Windows 7, in Stellarium's compatibility mode options set "Disable desktop composition".

If this doesn't help, try installing the drivers again. First make sure that these are the right drivers for you graphics card model.

The "screen graphics became very large" sounds like the driver's installer has switched the screen to a low resolution. This may be necessary for the drivers to be reloaded. Please wait until the end of the installation. If it doesn't restore your previous screen resolution, you can try restarting or setting it manually in the usual way (right click on the desktop -> "Properties" -> "Settings", etc.).

And please, if you are replying by e-mail, delete the text of the original message, as all of your e-mail will be included in the comment displayed at Launchpad.

Again, thanks for your prompt response.
I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit, with an ATI Radeon HD 3650 graphics card.  (By the way--your tip to click on Option 2 was a big help.)

Pressing F11 stopped the flashing and has allowed me to utilize Stellarium.  Does that mean that the driver was incorrectly installed?   I don't seem to be having a problem with the graphics on any other programs at this time.

I don't know. Several other people have complained about flashing. It seems to be unrelated to the graphics drivers. It may be related to the advanced desktop effects used in the more recent versions of Windows.

Thanks again for your time and assistance. It's good to be able to utilize the Stellarium program.
