how to delete/edit location

Asked by tonyvr4

I entered a new location bases on where I live, but realized that I entered the coordinated wrong. When I went back to edit the location, it somehow duplicated and now I have two locations and both are wrong.

Is there any way to delete both of these locations so that I can enter a correct one ?
Thanks

Assuming you are using Stellarium 0.10.2, the latest version so far:

Select the new location in the big list. The "Delete" button left of "Add to list" should become enabled. Just press it to delete the location. (This doesn't work on the locations in the original list, only on the user-defined ones.)

As far as I know, there's no way to edit an already entered location except by editing the user_locations.txt file. It's in the user data directory, sub-directory "data". It is recommended to use a programmers' text editor like Notepad++ because of encoding and end-of-line character issues. The user data directory is located in different places on the different operating systems:

I found the data directory but there is no file called user_locations.txt there

Does this mean that the "Delete" button doesn't work?

I can think of two different cases in which user_locations.txt may be missing:
- You have already deleted all user-defined locations.
- You are looking in the wrong "data" directory. It's not the one in Stellarium's installation directory, it's in the user data directory. What is you operating system?

Ah, that must be it. I was looking in the program files under stellarium

I am using windows vista. I was able to do a search and finally found the file in: C:\Users\Tony\AppData\Roaming\Stellarium\data\user_locations.txt

The file did have multiple entries for the city, so I just deleted one. Do you think a feature such as this may be added to the program to facilitate user location editing ?

Using Notepad++ was straightforward, but doing it within the program would be so much easier

Thanks for the help

Well, the Location dialog needs some re-design, but everybody's busy with other things now.
