Synchronization of Stellarium w/ planetarium equipment

Asked by bentleyousley

Hello,

I’m a noobie to Stellarium. I’m hoping that someone might be kind enough to offer some advice.

I’m exploring the feasibility of using Stellarium in concert with existing planetarium equipment to replace the star-field projection that is currently supplied by a Spitz starball. We are looking at an ePlanetarium system that uses Stellarium for starfield projection. We have existing shows that we are looking to adapt and one technical issue I am trying to address is the ability to synchronize existing equipment with Stellarium. SMPTE timecode is currently used to synchronize the various elements of the shows. I’m hoping to get information regarding how I might be able to either trigger Stellarium scripts remotely or build an application that will read SMPTE time code and send messages to Stellarium.

One idea I had: I wrote a Windows application (for planetarium use) that reads SMPTE timecode and synchronizes media presented on an LCD projector by using the API of a Windows media application and triggering events within that application. My thought is, that by modifying this application I might be able to tie-in to the API of Stellarium and trigger events (possibly scripts?) in a similar way.

I would be very grateful for any advice regarding what I am trying to accomplish.

Thank you so much for your help!

Sorry for the late answer - I was hoping that some of the more senior developers would answer first.

I'm not sure which version of Stellarium you are using, but in all cases, it seems to me that what you describe can be done with a plug-in. The new scripting engine in Stellarium 0.10.2 is still a work in progress, and I am not sure that the old one is powerful enough.

For more information on Stellarium plug-ins, you can read this:
http://www.stellarium.org/doc/head/plugins.html
http://www.stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Plugins
http://www.stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Plugin_Development

Unfortunately, there is little useful information about Stellarium plug-ins published right now. If there is something unclear, you can ask in the developers mailing list:
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/stellarium-pubdevel

You may also want to look at Nightshade. It's a planetarium-only fork of an old Stellarium version (8.1), developed by Digitalis Educational Solutions:

Can you help with this problem?
