Why are calculations of phenomena not possible prior to year 1582 AD?

When using astronomical calculations to calculate phenomena it is not possible to extend the date range back past 1582 AD.
Why is this?
This same limitation does not exist when calculating eclipses.

This is a limit of the Qt calendar interface.
