Bookmarks do not display

When I first exported my bookmarks and then imported them Iam sure they appeared as the crosses as original. now when I import them they do not display and I have to highlight bookmark to see anything. The highlight rings are not as useful as the crosses. I am sure this happened before I upgraded to 0.21.0 so it probably isnt a version related issue.
Is this normal?
The other problem i am having is that the marker numbers do not seem to relate to my database any more could they have been changed by adding more bookmarks?
