Stellarium 0.16.0 Binary for Mac OSX 10.11.6

Asked by Keith Mann on 2017-09-22

Request / Question:

Mac OSX OS finished with release 10.11.6 (El Capitan) and then became Mac OS with release 10.12 (Sierra).

There are still a lot of people running Apple MAC computers with Mac OSX. Would it be possible to provide a 0.16.0 binary that works for Mac OSX and not just Mac OS?

Old Windows OS users (e.g. Windows 7) are not excluded from running the latest Stellarium binary, but Mac OSX users are. Why?

Thank you.

What is the technical difference? Can you run older MacOSX software on MacOS? Or what exactly happens if you try to install 0.16.0 on a MacOSX 10.11.6?
We have no Mac developer currently and simply may not be aware of these differences.

I can't build Stellarium for Mac OS X 10.11 because I don't have it.

OK.

I will have a ago at building a binary for Mac OSX 10.11.6 from the source code.

I can try reduce the deployment target to version 10.11, but I will may not check this package in real environment. Would you assist me for this case?

That’s great. More than happy to help. Thank you.

I’ve downloaded and it runs OK. Thank you.

I’ve also had a go at building Stellarium from source code. I followed the process on the Stellarium WIKI called “Compilation on Mac OSX”. I used HomeBrew to install the additional tools required, but not included in Xcode 7.3, e.g. Qt 5.9.1.

Following the process word for word also generated a Stellarium 0.90.0 trunk version on my laptop, which does not appear to align with official current release, but run OK. I then re-run the build process with cmake options:
-DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release -DSTELLARIUM_VERSION=0.16.1 ../..

and this did create a 0.16.1 version, which runs OK.

I am not sure how the 0.90.0 and 0.16.1 versions differ, as both appear identical when running (based on the few quick functional checks), generated similar warnings when building / compiling, and similar certification errors / warnings appear in the running log file.

I'll build and upload version 0.16.1.1 for Mac OS X 10.11 tonight. Thanks for testing!

Difference between 0.16.1 and 0.90.0 is not big at the moment, but it will be bigger in time.

Downloaded version 0.16.1.1 for Mac OSX, installs and runs fine on OSX 10.11.6. Thank you.
