Using Stellarium to prepare a visual observing session

Asked by Orfest

Hi,

Before a visual observing session I'd like to answer the following questions:
1. Which Deep-sky Objects of magnitude <10 will be at least 15° above the horizon at midnight?
2. Which strongly colored stars magnitude <10 will be at least 15° above the horizon at midnight?
3. Which double stars magnitude <10 will be at least 15° above the horizon at midnight?

I cannot find a way to answer these questions using Stellarium.
1. Turning the DSOs on, setting time to midnight and carefully choosing the zoom level, I can get a set of DSOs. But:
    a. I need to click every one of them to record their name and position.
    b. I have to scan the sky, because on the needed zoom level only a part of sky is visible.
2. No way to filter stars by color.
3. No way to filter stars by being double/triple/quadruple.

I would appreciate, if you could share your tips for preparing for an observing session.
- Are there plugins that fit my use case?
- Are there UI features that I miss?

If I get no responses, will file feature requests.

There is no observation planner available. You can script your own.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Orfest for more information if necessary.
