Will Stellarium work with my graphics card?

Asked by Jackson Clark

I downloaded Stellarium. A bunch of Stellarium files are now in my C drive when I search, but Stellarium does not appear in my Apps list (Windows 10) and there are no icons anywhere, so I don't know how to launch it. I have 32 bit Dell Vostro 220s computer with Intel G45/G43 graphics card. Can you help me get Stellarium running? Please talk slowly; I'm not very computer smart. Thanks.

Version 0.12.6 and prior - yes. Version 0.13.0 and above seems no.

I downloaded Version 0.12.6. Two files were then downloaded: stellarium-0.12.6-win32, and B-HM60BSPWWB-1010.0. When I tried to open the first file I got the error message "The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program." Advice? Thanks.

The message "files are corrupted" means that the the download did not go correctly. Try to download the same files again. For example from here: https://launchpad.net/stellarium/+download

I did the download of 0.12.6 again and the download worked. However, when I tried to launch the program I got the message "Your platform does not support minimum required Open GL1.2. Please update drivers for graphics card." So should I try an earlier version, and if so, do you know which one will work for my graphics card? Thanks for your help.

I was finally able to download and install version stellarium-0.11.4-win32.exe. When I closed the program - by clicking the far right button that looks like a circle with a vertical line coming down from the top - the program disappeared. However, stellarium was not in my Start Menu, or an icon on my desktop, nor is it listed in my program files on the C drive. I have done this download and install three times now with the same result. Any idea why Stellarium is not being actually stored as a program? I am running Comodo, but I have selected Trusted for Stellarium, and it does obviously allow me to complete the downloard and install. Thanks for your help.

Seems you have the limited right access to file system. I can't help you in this case, because this limitation can be implemented non trivial.

Thanks for taking the time to help me this issue. I would dearly love to be able to use the program.
I don't understand your response. I assume you mean "limited write access to file system"? This puzzles me. I'm the administrator on my home PC with full administrator rights, and I've never had a problem downloading and installing any software. Can you provide a little more explanation on what you think the problem is?
Thanks.

It's very strange. Can you write sequence of installation steps?

I picked the version from Older Releases Windows 32 bit. I selected the version, and the download and installation completed automatically; I left all the default choices, such as storing the program in my C drive Program Files. The last screen, I checked both the Read Me and Open Stellarium. The Read Me text document opened, and the Stellarium front page opened and it was ready to run. I didn't know how to use the program, so I decided to close it and read about it. I clicked the button in the lower right menu that looks like a circle intersected by a vertical line coming down from the top. Then, when I went looking for the program there was no evidence of stellarium in my Start Menu, program files, or desktop icons. I did this three times with the same result. What else can I tell you?
