Star Counts within FOV?

Asked by Jon Seamans

Over the years Stellarium has evolved to be a great academic tool as well as a great observational one. As an astrometry geek, I've had an ongoing interest in star-count data within various FoVs and limiting magnitudes. I finally decided to ask this question:

Within Stellarium, is there a way (scripting?) to access star-count data within the displayed field of view and a user-settable magnitude limit?

It seems it should be straight forward to do - everything is "there". I just can't see a way to do this within Stellarium. Using other programs, I've created an involved manual method using Stellarium screenshots. I believe I get pretty good counts to 10's of thousands of stars but there must be a better way :)

Thank you.

No simple way for count of stars within FOV. You can set specific FOV and limit for magnitude for stars, and you can get visual magnitude for selected objects within scripts. I guess it can be implemented as additional function for scripting engine - you need fill the feature request (through bug report) with description of wanted features and use cases for it.
